17 News Photos of Global Drama That Will Make You Give a Shit

In 1955, a group of Dutch photographers laid the groundwork for the World Press Photo Foundation by organizing a contest designed to show off their work to the global news community. Over the intervening decades, the competition has gained in stature and is now one of the most-coveted awards in photojournalism and multimedia storytelling.

The World Press Photo Foundation aims to inspire, to engage, to educate, and to support  "freedom of inquiry and freedom of speech and ... high-quality reporting." The organization lists its values as: Accuracy, impartiality, fairness, respect, transparency, and accountability.

In short, the World Press Photo Contest awards people who give a shit about making you give a shit. The least we can do is look and take the risk of being moved into awareness and toward action.
