Bill Murray Is Tending Bar in Brooklyn: Please Send Pics

This is not a movie, but you could make it into one.

Actor Bill Murray can make a ton of money and melt a host of hearts by doing what appears to be very little; so it’s to his credit that he has often forsaken his cushy movie-star salary to appear in the more arduous and less enriching work of independent auteur filmmakers such as Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, 2014), Jim Jarmusch (Broken Flowers, 2005), and Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, 2003). Sure, Murray is presumed to have amassed many millions of dollars; so it’s not like he's going broke by taking jobs that even on the low-end scale probably pay him more in a month than the rest of us make in five years.

Probably, someone will tip Bill, because wise alcohol consumers do tip bartenders, but in this day and age, who can live on gratuities alone?

So we can go ahead and freely bitch about Bill Murray’s flaunted largesse, but only until Friday afternoon. Starting Friday night, as reported by Time Out New York, Bill Murray will be working for free. He will be making no money. Not even expenses or transportation. Bill Murray will be tending bar at a place called 21 Greenpoint, a new, presumably upscale, cocktail lounge in Brooklyn. Probably, someone will tip Bill, because wise alcohol consumers do tip bartenders, but in this day and age, who can live on gratuities alone?

Murray landed the 21 Greenpoint bartending gig because he has an in with the owners; one of them is his son Homer Murray. Dad Murray’s residency at 21 Greenpoint is a two-shift stint—Friday and Saturday—so no one from this office will be able to attend, and probably neither will you. The evening’s drinking will be invite only.

However, there is no guest-list protocol that can keep an interested observer from hanging around outside 21 Greenpoint with camera poised, ready to take a pic of Bill when he steps outside for a well-earned smoke break. All Bill Murray interaction stories forwarded to KINDLAND are appreciated; only stories accompanied by photos will be posted.
