Chill No Chill: Robot Retail
On Wednesday, Japanese telecom company SoftBank announced plans for a retail cell-phone store staffed primarily with robots. The "Pepper," is a robot the company introduced in 2014, and will be the model used in staffing the pop-up store, which will be open to the Tokyo public for a week later this spring. Users interact with the bots via a chest-mounted touch-screen. The robots understand speech. The end of humanity as we know it comes next. Is buying a smartphone from a robot equally, if not more, chill than from a "Genius" in an Apple polo? Or does the very idea of this no-chill store conjure up images of the intro scene from Terminator 2: Judgement Day?
