Miley Cyrus On Why She's Taking A Break From Marijuana
After years of being open about her cannabis use, Cyrus divulges as to why she's cooling her weedy jets.
“This is crazy,” Miley Cyrus recently said to Billboard. “But I haven’t smoked weed in three weeks!”
For Cyrus, a fortnight plus seven days is indeed a long time to go cannabis-free. But it's not surprising when put in the context of her evolutionary stint under the spotlight.
The 24-year-old singer, actress, and daughter of one-hit country music wonder Billy Ray Cyrus has long championed marijuana use. In the past, weed was a seemingly integral piece of the Miley Cyrus persona. At times, the singer who produced such memorable tracks as "Party in the U.S.A.," and more recently, "Wrecking Ball," was so open about her pot smoking it drew chagrin from the press and parents of her mostly pre-teen fanbase. Simultaneously, weed would become common ground between the adolescent Cyrus and would-be collaborators Wiz Khalifa and A-List hip hop producer Mike Will Made It.
"I like to surround myself with people that make me want to get better, more evolved, open. And I was noticing, it’s not the people that are stoned," Cyrus said to Billboard. "I want to be super clear and sharp, because I know exactly where I want to be.”
The coming out on why she's taking some time off from being stoned was part of an exclusive interview with veteran music journalist John Norris for Billboard. At her home in Malibu, California, and in the midst of another reinvention, Cyrus previewed her latest material––10 songs, which includes the just-released "Malibu"––for Norris, and she spoke candidly about her personal life.
". . . I haven’t smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I’ve ever [gone without it]. I’m not doing drugs, I’m not drinking, I’m completely clean right now! That was just something that I wanted to do. . ."
"Is it hard not to smoke?"
"It’s easy, dude. When I want something, it’s fucking easy for me. But if anyone told me not to smoke, I would have not done it. It’s because it was on my time. I know exactly where I am right now. I know what I want this record to be."
High or not, we––and her millions of adorning fans––have nothing but love for Miley Cyrus: A true inspiration and creative force.
