The KINDLAND Guide To Taking A Perfect Dab

We even included pictures so you won’t blow up your house, or you know, do it wrong.

Dabbing can be pretty intimidating, to say the least. It doesn't help either that the "extreme" way of consuming cannabis looks (to the uninitiated anyway) similar to how you might knock back harder drugs like heroin or crack-cocaine.

That said, such a comparison is wholly unfair and inaccurate, which is why we want to do our due diligence to set the record straight on the wonderful world of dabbing starting with a few handy tips.

What You’ll Need

Since dabbing has users heating a surface such as a skillet, nail, or banger to extreme temperatures in order to vaporize the cannabis extracts, a simple lighter just isn’t enough. Most people use a butane torch (think creme brulee torch), though a denatured alcohol-burning lamp would suffice, as would an electronic nail (e-nail).

The device used to heat said surface is less important than the temperature you heat it to. The sweet spot for maintaining flavor profiles of the terpenes, maximizing THC/CBD output, and not burning the dab lands between 675 and 750 degrees Fahrenheit. Part of why people think dabbing is so insane is because their first time would qualify as a “hot dab.” This scenario scorches away any and all desired flavor from the product and sends truly hot vapor down your windpipe, effectively ensuring a couch-locked coughing fit followed by an immediate and probably overwhelming high. But when taken at the perfect temp, and at a low dose, a dab can elicit a subtle, flavorful high, and enables “targeted dosing,” which is partly why marijuana can be considered medicine.

You’ll also need a “dabber” tool, which looks like a dental tool and is used to move the product onto the hot surface, whether it be a rig or a bong, typically made of glass, that filters the smoke through water. A carb cap, or dome, is basically just something to cover the surface and create drag in the same fashion as putting one’s finger over the little hole on the side of a handpipe. And for cleanup, a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.

It's best to have everything prepared and at close reach beforehand so you're not scrambling once you start dabbing.

Ready, Set, Dab

Now that you’ve got all the right gear, it’s time to get high. Simply follow these four easy steps, and you’ll be elevated and medicated in no time at all.

Step 1: Load your dab onto the dabber.

Step 2: Heat your surface to appropriate temps. If you’re not a total weed nerd like KINDLAND editors are, and don’t have a temperature-reading gun, you should be fine so long as you heat the surface until it is glowing red hot, and then before dabbing, give it about 45 seconds to cool. And most electronic nails have a digital temperature gauge. Moreover, a recent study shows though, that dabbing concentrates from a surface heated to more than 750 degrees can actually be hazardous to one's well being, and just generally no bueno

Step 3: Touch the dab to the hot surface and inhale.

Step 4: Exhale. Take in your surroundings. Maybe watch a movie, or go for a bike ride, or cure cancer for all we care. Just do you, baby.

Step: 5: Next just clean your dabbing surface with a cotton swab that’s been dipped in the isopropyl alcohol. This is best done immediately after dabbing, so as the residual wax doesn’t char and burn onto your banger.

And there you have it. Now you’re smoking weed like the cool kids.
