Study Says Marijuana Could Increase Risk for Stroke, Heart Failure

Let’s hope there’s more detailed research coming soon.

A new study published in the American College of Cardiology (ACC) says that weed is associated with risk of stroke and heart failure. The study, the first of its kind to really dive into cardiovascular health and pot, begs for more studies to fully understand the side effects of a weedy heart.

From CBS:

In the study, [the] group looked at 20 million health records of patients aged 18 to 55 who were discharged from one of more than a thousand hospitals across the United States in 2009 and 2010. Of those patients, 1.5 percent said they’d used marijuana. Such use was associated with a much higher risk for stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease and sudden cardiac death. Pot use was also tied to common heart disease risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, and drinking, the researchers said.

And that’s not all. Even when the researchers corrected for known risk factors, they still found a higher rate of stroke and heart failure — a 26 percent increase in the risk of stroke and a 10 percent increase in the risk of developing heart failure, according to the ACC press release. Still, there’s not enough research to know the exact causes for these higher risks, but as marijuana becomes legal and more doctors prescribe it as medicine, this study hopes to get momentum on research based on heart health and weed.

But there’s reason to take this study with a grain of salt (or a nug of dank weed) because this research is data-driven, based solely on reported marijuana use from 2009 and 2010 — a time when weed was still plenty illegal, and who knows how accurate patient reporting was then. Or is now. And, another thing to consider: Marijuana is so advanced now that you can treat and medicate many ailments with proper dosages, meaning you might not be smoking weed that gets you all fucked up with the munchies — causing your heart to fucking disintegrate over time. You might be more active on your perfect dose of weed today, right?

However there’s still a cause for concern with this new information, and hopefully, there will be some real money put behind a real, longterm test group to find out if marijuana is as bad for your heart as this study suggests.

According to the study, weed was also linked with factors known to increase cardiovascular risks like obesity, high blood pressure, smoking, and alcohol use.

If you plan to smoke weed, keep your heart healthy, and get off the fucking couch, you know? Or get yourself properly dosed with the good stuff so you can keep on living your best, healthy life.

Cardiologists will present this study at the American College of Cardiology’s 66th Annual Scientific Session on March 17-19 in Washington D.C.
