That Ricky Williams Cannabis Gym to Open in San Francisco; Now With Less Ricky
Not a regular gym, a cool gym.
Remember the middle of last year, and everybody in the weed world was excited about a marijuana-friendly gym that former New Orleans Saint Ricky WIlliams planned to have up and running by the end of 2016, with the assistance of partner Jim McAlpine?
Well, the news now is that the gym will be happening sometime around the middle of 2017, but apparently with less Ricky Williams than initially anticipated.
This May, San Francisco will welcome the first weedy gym of its kind, Power Plant Fitness, where members can (if all goes well) consume weed at the gym before or after their workouts. The gym has been in the works for a while, and Jim McAlpine got some seed money from former NFL player (and weed lover) Ricky Williams.
Power Plant Fitness will be a premier gym, McAlpine says, not just a hangout for potheads. Though, to be clear, there will be weed. He’s still hammering out the details, but McAlpine envisions offering cannabis performance assessments, in which trainers help determine how the plant can help an athlete work out before guiding them through weed-assisted fitness plans. In addition, McAlpine hopes, members will be free to buy and consume cannabis on site, including Power Plant’s own line of edibles, which he says are “made for pre-workout focus and post-workout recovery.”
A lot of people claim that cannabis is the thing that gets them in the zone to get their workout on, and it can help with chronic injury pain.
“If you use it right, cannabis takes the things you love and lets you love them more,” McAlpine, tells Outside. “With fitness, that can help get you into the zone, into eye-of-the-tiger mode.”
So if running has always been a nightmare situation for you, maybe just a little a bit of cannabis will make it enjoyable.
Power Plant Fitness is set to open in May in San Francisco’s Mission District.
